How to find a fitter: maintenance, assembly, toolmaker
One fitter is not like another
The word covers several specialisations. A maintenance fitter services and repairs equipment in the workshop, an assembly fitter puts together units and products, a toolmaker makes and mends tooling, dies and fixtures, and a plumbing fitter works with pipes and valves. A candidate from one area will not necessarily cope in another, so say exactly what you need.
Qualification and real skills
A qualification, such as an ITI certificate, shows the level, but practice matters more. Ask which machines, units or systems the person has dealt with, whether he reads drawings, and what he measures with (vernier calliper, micrometer, dial indicator). For a maintenance fitter, fault-finding and experience of breakdowns matter; for an assembly fitter, accuracy of fits. Also say whether clearance for work with electrical or pneumatic equipment is needed.
Think about conditions too: whether the company has safety instructions, whether work clothing is issued, whether there is clearance for work at height or with lifting equipment. For maintenance fitters, on-call duty for breakdowns is often important, so say whether it is paid and how call-outs work.

- Specialisation — maintenance, assembly, toolmaker;
- Qualification — for example, an ITI certificate;

How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You describe the job once, without repeating it in ten places. The request is checked for ads and extra contacts, and you get hints about missing details. Candidates in your region reply in chat: specialisation, experience, start date and expected pay. Reviews help you compare. Your phone stays hidden until you choose a person. Read how it works.
How to select a candidate
Ask him to describe a typical repair: what he checks first, how he takes a unit apart, how he records wear. For an assembly fitter, ask how he checks fits and tightening torque. Ask whether he has his own tools or they are issued. A trial day helps you see how the person works on real equipment. For related work in the workshop you may need a welder or an electrician, and for making parts, a lathe operator.
