Kids' fancy dress costume: buy, rent or have one made
Buy, rent or have one made
A costume is usually needed for one morning, so first decide whether buying makes sense. Renting pays off when the look is complicated (a dragon, a knight in armour) or the child will outgrow it by next year. Buying is better if the costume will later be part of play or go to a younger sibling. Having one made suits a unique look or an unusual size, but the tailor needs time.
In your request write which option you are considering, and you can even name several: “buy or rent for 1 day”.
What to put in your request
- look or character — snowflake, superhero, princess, animal;
- child's height or age;
- for whom — boy or girl;
- buying, renting or stitching to order;
- what is included — mask, crown, wings, cloak, cap, wand;
- date of the function — important for both renting and stitching;
- new or used — a used costume in good condition is often cheaper;
- city, delivery or pickup and budget, if you want to name it.
“I need a snowflake costume for a girl, height 110 cm, with a crown and a wand. School annual day on 26 December, renting for 1 day or used is fine. Jaipur, pickup, budget up to ₹1,000.”
Fabric, safety and comfort
A child in a costume overheats quickly indoors, especially in the hot months, so ask about the material: synthetic satin shines but doesn't breathe, while net and non-woven fabric are lighter. People often wear thermals or tights under a costume, so take the size with some room.
Make sure the mask doesn't block vision and small decorations (sequins, beads) are stitched on firmly. For toddlers, avoid hard accessories. Ask whether the costume can be washed and what is needed to adjust it to the child's height.
Renting: what to check
Ask about the deposit, the return time, whether the costume is cleaned after every rental and what happens if there is a stain. These terms are usually agreed before handover. For renting, allow an extra day too: the costume should be tried on beforehand, not on the morning of the function.
