Newborn clothing: what to buy and how not to overpay

What goes into a baby's first wardrobe

In the first weeks a baby grows very fast, so it is not worth buying lots of clothes in one size. To start with, a few bodysuits with long and short sleeves, sleepsuits, caps, scratch mittens, swaddle cloths and one going-home outfit are usually enough. Some of the clothes will be needed in a bigger size within two or three weeks.

On sizes: newborn clothes usually come in 50, 56 and 62 (the height in cm). If your baby is born big, size 50 may not be needed at all, so it is more comfortable to have more things in size 56.

Fabric and seams: what really matters

A baby's skin is delicate, so choose soft natural fabrics: cotton, interlock, soft knits. Seams are best on the outside or flat, and labels should not scratch the neck. Snap fastenings on the shoulders and between the legs are easier than zips: dressing the baby and changing nappies is simpler. Wash new clothes before the first wear.

What to put in your request

  • what exactly — bodysuits, sleepsuits, going-home set, swaddle, cap;
  • size — 50, 56, 62 or age in months;
  • season — especially for the going-home set and the swaddle;
  • quantity — for example, 5 bodysuits or a full set;
  • fabric — cotton, interlock, knit, fleece, organic cotton;
  • the baby's gender and colour, if they matter;
  • new or used, and what condition is acceptable;
  • delivery city and budget, if you want to name one.

“I need a going-home set for a baby boy in the cooler months: swaddle, sleepsuit, cap, size 56, cotton, white or grey, new. Also 5 long-sleeve bodysuits in size 56. Delivery to Pune, budget up to ₹4,000.”

New or used

Babies wear things for a short time, so used bodysuits and sleepsuits in good condition are often a good buy. Ask about washing, stains, stretched cuffs and the state of the snaps. But caps, swaddle cloths and anything that touches the skin near the face are better bought new. A swaddle and a going-home outfit are usually bought new: they are worn once, but you want the day to be remembered with something neat.

Questions and answers

How much clothing should I buy for a newborn?

A small set is enough to start with, because the baby grows quickly. It is better to have more things in size 56 than many in size 50.

Which size should I choose for the going-home outfit?

Most people take 56, and 62 if the baby is big. Go by the expected height and the season.

Is it safe to buy used clothes for a newborn?

For bodysuits and sleepsuits in good condition, it is fine. Ask about washing and stains, and buy caps and swaddle cloths new.
