First decide what kind of relaxation you want
The word "sauna" covers very different things. A Finnish sauna is dry heat, a steam room is moist heat, a hammam is wet steam and marble, and a spa complex adds pools, massages and care programmes. The choice affects both the price and the feel of the evening.
Another difference is private hire versus entry to a shared area. For a group, you usually book a hall by the hour so the whole space is yours. For two people, a spa package is often enough.
What to put in your request
- Type of venue — Finnish sauna, steam room, hammam, spa complex or a package.
- Number of people — this decides the room and any extra charge per additional guest.
- Duration — number of hours or overnight. Many places have a minimum booking of two or three hours.
- Date — day and time; demand is higher at weekends.
- What you need — a pool, jacuzzi, pool table, karaoke, an attendant, a massage.
- Food — your own or ordered from the venue.
- City or area, and your budget.

What to look at in the offers
Ask whether the price is per hour or for the whole time, and whether it is for the group or per person. Check what is included: hire of the sauna, water, towels, bathrobes, tea. Some venues charge extra for additional guests or for an extra hour.
Terms on food and drinks vary: some let you bring your own, others require you to order from them. Also ask about advance payment and the cancellation rules, because on festival dates places are booked well ahead.
