Semi-trailers for tractor units: how to buy new and used well
The type of semi-trailer depends on the load
A semi-trailer is hitched to a tractor unit, and it comes in many kinds. A curtain-sided one carries pallets and general cargo, a reefer holds the temperature for food and medicines, a flatbed suits containers, and a tipper suits loose materials. So start with the load and the temperature needed, and only then talk about the make.
Also check compatibility: the type and height of the fifth wheel, the number of axles, the brake system and the electrics must suit your tractor unit.
What to put in your request
- Type of semi-trailer — curtain-sided, reefer, flatbed, tipper, tanker.
- Make — Krone, Schmitz Cargobull, Kögel or another.
- Year — from which year you are looking.
- Load capacity and volume — for example 24 tonnes and 86 m³.
- Number of axles — usually 3.
- Equipment — a Thermo King or Carrier cooling unit, lift axle, disc brakes.
- Papers — import duty paid, registered.
- Technical condition — no repairs needed or minor repairs acceptable.
- City and budget, if you want to state it.
Example: “Looking for a Krone or Schmitz Cargobull reefer semi-trailer from 2014, 3 axles, load capacity 24 tonnes, volume about 86 m³, Thermo King cooling unit and a lift axle. Import duty paid, no repairs needed. Delhi, budget up to ₹18 lakh.”
Things to know about a reefer
On a reefer semi-trailer the cooling unit holds the price. Ask about its engine hours separately from the trailer's own mileage, the date of the last service and whether there is a temperature record from the road (a data logger). Inspect the insulation of the walls and floor: a damaged panel means lost cold.
Also look at the doors and seals, the state of the floor and the rails for fixing cargo. For carrying food there are often food-safety requirements, so find out about them in advance.
How to compare offers
- The same type, year, number of axles and length.
- Engine hours and service history of the cooling unit.
- The state of the frame, axles, tyres and brakes: these are the most expensive future costs.
- Papers and customs documents: whether import duty is paid and in whose name it is registered.
There are cases where a cheap semi-trailer turns out to be expensive after repair. So bring a mechanic or ask for a diagnostic check.
A new semi-trailer gives you a warranty, current standards and sometimes finance or lease programmes from dealers. A used one from abroad usually costs less, but needs careful checking and attention to the papers. If you buy from abroad, ask about the service history and customs clearance. In any case compare offers on the same terms: year, equipment, condition.
How searching works on BlaBlaPrice
You write one request, and sellers reply in the chat, sending the price or what it depends on, terms and photos. The request is checked before it is shown, and you get hints on what is missing. The best-fitting offer is shown first, with reviews next to it. Sellers see their place among the others, so they compete for your request. You open your phone only to the one you choose. More on the “How it works” page.
For narrower jobs look at dropside, tipper or container semi-trailers.
