First work out what kind of help is needed
“Addiction treatment” can mean several different things, and they differ a lot in complexity and cost. Detox after heavy drinking at home, or a drip, is emergency help for intoxication. Relapse-prevention treatment comes afterwards, done in a stable condition once detox is complete. The long process is a programme at a rehabilitation centre, where doctors, psychologists and counsellors work together.
Addiction comes in different forms: alcohol, drugs, gambling, nicotine or medicines. Different methods suit each, so it is better to name the type of addiction directly in your request. Everything about treatment is finally decided by a doctor after an examination, not by an advertisement.
What to put in your request
- Service — detox, drip, relapse-prevention treatment, consultation or inpatient care.
- Type of addiction — alcohol, drugs, gambling, nicotine, medicines.
- Where help is given — a doctor visiting your home, outpatient, inpatient or a rehabilitation centre.
- The patient's condition — how many days of drinking, blood pressure, chronic illnesses, age, whether the patient agrees.
- When — urgently or on a certain date.
- City and area.
- Privacy — whether you need confidential treatment.
- Duration — how long the treatment effect should last, or the length of the programme.
- Budget, if you want to name one.

What to check in the offers
Ask them to list what is included in the price: the doctor's visit, drip medicines, follow-up visits, monitoring. Ask whether the doctor is a registered medical practitioner, and who exactly will come: a doctor or a nurse. For inpatient care and centres, ask about accommodation, meals, psychological help and what happens after discharge.
Be careful if they promise a “hundred per cent result” or refuse to explain the medicines and method. An honest doctor does not guarantee what also depends on the person themselves.
Common mistakes
The most common are delaying until the condition is already severe, or choosing a relapse-prevention procedure without a prior check-up. Another is deciding for a person without their consent: treatment works much better when the patient is ready. Be sure to tell the doctor about any serious chronic illnesses and the medicines the person takes.
