Basketball and volleyball: how to buy a ball, hoop with backboard, kit
Where you will play: hall, outdoors or beach
Everything depends on where you play. For indoor courts people take a ball with a leather or composite cover, for outdoors tough rubber or a hard-wearing synthetic, and for the beach a volleyball that is softer than an indoor one. An outdoor basketball quickly loses grip in a hall, and an indoor ball wears away on tarmac. Always say in your request where you will play. The same goes for shoes: for a hall you need a sole that leaves no marks and grips the wooden floor, and for outdoors a tougher one.
Ball size
Basketballs come in sizes 5, 6 and 7: 7 for men, 6 for women and teenagers, 5 for children. A volleyball is the same size, but differs by purpose: indoor, beach or recreational. For competitions people look for FIBA or FIVB approval. For school lessons and training, official approval is usually not needed, so don't overpay for it.
Hoop with backboard and stand
A basketball hoop is bought wall-mounted or on a stand. A wall-mounted one is more stable and cheaper, a stand is mobile but needs ballast and space. Look at the backboard material: acrylic and glass give a better bounce, plastic is simpler. Adjustable height is needed if children and adults will play. The hoop should have a spring or shock-absorbing rim for safer play.
