Caravan or tent trailer: buy or rent at a good price
A light tent trailer or a full caravan
This category holds several different things. A tent trailer is a box with a fold-out tent: it is light and suits an ordinary car. A caravan has a rigid body with beds and a kitchen, sometimes a toilet and shower, but needs a stronger car. So start not with a brand but with what you will tow with and how long you will travel.
Count the weight at once. The permitted towing weight is in your car's papers, and the total weight of the trailer must not exceed it. Caravans come from compact to very large.
What to put in your request
- Type of trailer — tent trailer, caravan, folding or rigid.
- Beds — how many people, whether there are children.
- Buy or rent — for rent, the dates and length.
- Maker — any you prefer; you can list several.
- Year — from which year you are looking.
- Gross weight — to fit your car, for example up to 750 kg.
- Equipment — kitchen, fridge, toilet, awning, canopy.
- Condition — new or used, no leaks.
- City and budget, if you want to state it.
Example: “I need a tent trailer for a car, for 4 people, gross weight up to 750 kg, any maker. Used, not older than 2005, no leaks, with a kitchen and an awning. Bengaluru, budget up to ₹8 lakh. I can also consider renting for a week.”
Inspecting a used caravan
The main enemy is damp. Follow the corners, seams and the areas around the windows, and look at the ceiling from inside: no stains and no soft spots in the walls. Inspect the chassis, the drawbar with the hitch, overrun brakes, springs or torsion bars, and the tyres. Match the chassis number with the papers.
Check the gas system, wiring and water supply, and the papers needed to register the trailer.
Renting instead of buying
If you go on holiday once a year, renting is easier: no storage and insurance costs. In rental offers, find out the deposit, whether a set of dishes and bedding is included, whether your car needs a tow bar and what socket it has.
Demand for caravans and campsites is highest in the holiday season, so rent early, and buy off-season for a better deal. Think about where you will keep the trailer in the monsoon and the off-season: a garage, a yard or a guarded parking lot. For long storage, drain the water, air out the inside and check the tyres. All of this affects the total cost of owning one, so count it before you buy.
