Car AC repair and recharge: prices, refrigerant, diagnosis
A recharge rarely fixes the problem on its own
When the AC stops cooling, the first thought is to “top it up”. But refrigerant is not used up in a sealed system, so a shortage almost always means a leak. If the leak is not found, the recharge will last only until the next summer. That is why a good mechanic first checks for leaks, vacuums the system, and only then recharges it.
Typical causes: a leak at the condenser or hoses, a worn compressor (rattling, humming), a clogged radiator, faulty pressure sensors, a poor-quality recharge. Antibacterial cleaning is a separate job, if the vents smell musty.
What to put in your request
- what to do — a recharge with a leak check, repair or replacement of the compressor or condenser, pipe repair, cleaning;
- make, model, year and engine — for example Honda City, 2015;
- refrigerant — R134a or the newer R1234yf, which is found on newer cars and costs noticeably more;
- symptoms — does not cool, cools only while driving, the compressor rattles, smells;
- spare parts — yours or the mechanic's, original or aftermarket;
- mechanic call-out, city, timing and budget.
Example: “Honda City 2015, not cooling, it was recharged two years ago. I need a diagnosis, leak search and a recharge with antibacterial cleaning. Chennai, this week, budget up to ₹3,000.”
How to compare offers
The price difference often comes from what is included in the procedure. Ask whether there is a leak search (with UV dye or nitrogen), whether the system is vacuumed, whether the compressor oil is changed, and whether the drier is replaced. A cheap recharge “by eye” without vacuuming may not last even a season.
On BlaBlaPrice you describe your car and the symptom once, and mechanics reply in the chat: what exactly they will do, the price or what it depends on, and whether they can come to you. The site shows the best offer by substance first, with reviews next to it. Mechanics see their place among the others and improve their terms, while your number stays hidden until you choose a provider.
What affects the price
- type of refrigerant: R1234yf costs much more than R134a;
- the volume of the system and the amount of refrigerant for the recharge;
- the condition of the compressor and condenser: replacing these changes the sum dramatically;
- whether the drier, oil or hoses need replacing;
- a visit to you or a trip to the workshop.
Common mistakes
Recharging the system without knowing about a leak. Overpaying for a “premium refrigerant”, although the type is set by the manufacturer. Not asking for pressure readings before and after. Using the AC with a rattling compressor: parts can break up and clog the system. If the problem is in the electrics or sensors, auto electrical repair will help, and for a general check there is car computer diagnostics. Everything is in the section “Car & motorcycle servicing”.
