Children's furniture: how to choose and buy without extra costs

Start with the room size and the child's age

Children's furniture doesn't last long: a cot until about three, then a bed, and a few years later a study desk. So think ahead about a model that “grows” with the child: a convertible bed, an adjustable desk and chair. Note the dimensions of the room and doors, especially for a loft bed: a loft bed needs ceiling height, and a bunk bed needs free space by a wall.

Material and safety

Solid wood is stronger and lasts longer but costs more and is heavier. Engineered boards such as MDF and particle board are lighter and cheaper, but ask about the board's formaldehyde emission grade and ask for the certificate. Paint and varnish must be safe for a child. Edges should be rounded, with no sharp corners, and drawers should have stoppers.

What to put in your request

  • piece of furniture — cot, loft bed, desk with chair, chest of drawers, changing table, wardrobe;
  • size — dimensions or mattress size, for example 120×60 cm;
  • child's age;
  • material — solid wood, MDF, particle board, plastic;
  • features — swing mechanism, drawers, adjustable height, mattress included;
  • delivery — to the door or carried up to your floor;
  • assembly — yourself or by a carpenter;
  • condition, budget and city.

Example: “I need a new loft bed with a desk and a wardrobe underneath for a 5-year-old, wood or MDF, 190×80 cm mattress included. Delivery to Lucknow, carried up to the 5th floor with no lift, with assembly. Budget up to ₹25,000.”

Delivery and assembly in the price

With furniture most surprises happen after payment. Ask whether delivery is to your door or to the building entrance, whether they carry it up to your floor and what that costs, whether a carpenter assembles it and what happens if a fault turns up during assembly. Large furniture may need a goods vehicle, and this often makes the offers differ in price.

Check that everything is there: fittings, screws, keys, the manual. It is easier to spot a fault right at delivery, so inspect the boxes before the delivery person leaves.

How it works in BlaBlaPrice

You write the request once and furniture sellers reply in the chat with the model, price and delivery terms. BlaBlaPrice compares the offers and shows the best one first, judged on what it contains, with reviews of the seller next to each. Sellers see their place among the others and compete for your request. Contacts are hidden and only the one you choose gets them. More in how it works.

For the room you may also look at toys, and for walks prams and strollers.

Questions and answers

Solid wood or MDF: which is better for a child's room?

Solid wood is stronger and lasts longer but costs more. MDF is cheaper and lighter. Before buying, ask for the board's certificate and a safe finish.

Can I order assembly of the furniture?

Yes, say in the request that you need assembly. Sellers will write whether it is in the price or paid separately.

How do I account for delivery to a floor?

Write your floor and whether there is a lift, and check in the offers whether carrying up is in the price. This often separates offers that look alike in price.

Do sellers see my contacts?

No, contacts are hidden. You share them only with the seller you choose.
