Fishing gear: how to put together your tackle at a good price

Start with the type of fishing

There is no all-purpose tackle. Spinning for pike, feeder for bream, carp fishing with a long cast, float fishing in a pond and ice fishing all need different things. So in your request first write what you will catch and where: river, lake, pond or sea.

What decides the choice of rod and reel

On a rod look at the length and the test, the range of lure weight or feeder weight it can handle. A 3.6 m feeder rod with a test up to 120 g suits a current, while calm water needs a lighter one. A spinning rod is chosen for the weight of the plugs and jigs.

Reel size is given as a number: the bigger the number, the bigger the spool. It has to be matched to the rod and the line. The line diameter depends on the fish and the conditions: thinner is better for wary fish, but it must keep a safety margin. For a beginner it is usually better value to take a balanced set than an expensive reel on a weak rod.

What to put in your request

  • what exactly — rod, reel, line or braid, lures, hooks, landing net, echo sounder, waders;
  • type of fishing — spinning, feeder, carp, float, ice or sea fishing;
  • specifications — rod length and test, reel size, line diameter, lure weight;
  • brand and model, if you have already chosen;
  • angler's level — beginner or experienced;
  • quantity — for example, a set of 10 lures;
  • condition — new or used;
  • budget and delivery city.

Example: “Looking for a new 3.6 m feeder rod with a test up to 120 g for river fishing, to go with a 4000 reel. Level: beginner. Courier delivery to Kolkata, budget up to ₹8,000.”

How to compare offers

Compare on the same parameters: length, test, number of sections, blank material. Ask what is in the package: cover, spare tips, spare guides. On used rods check for cracks in the blank and the state of the guides, and on reels the play and smoothness of rotation.

Cheap lures and hooks are often poorer in quality, so for a set of lures ask about the country of manufacture and the type of hook coating. Don't buy everything in one place: you can get the rod from one seller and the accessories from another, as long as delivery is across India anyway.

How BlaBlaPrice works

You write your request once and sellers of fishing goods reply in the chat with prices, photos and terms. They can see where they stand among the others and adjust their offers, so the price often comes out better. Contacts are hidden and you contact only the one you choose. More details are on the “How it works” page.

Questions and answers

Which rod should a beginner take?

Usually an all-round one of medium length and moderate test, with a matching reel. Write where you will fish and which fish you want to catch.

What does the test of a rod mean?

It is the range of lure or weight the rod works properly with. Go beyond the test and you can break the rod or cast badly.

Is it worth buying used tackle?

It can be, if the condition is clear from the photos: blank without cracks, guides without chips, reel turning smoothly. Ask for extra photos and video.

Do I need to name a particular brand?

Not necessarily. Parameters and a budget are enough, and sellers will suggest suitable brands and models.
