Everything for the garden and vegetable patch: how to buy well from sellers

Where to start: the season and the job

In the garden and the vegetable patch everything depends on the calendar. Seeds and seedlings are bought at the start of the sowing season, fruit tree saplings before or at the start of the monsoon, fertilisers for a particular stage of growth, and a barbecue or a pool before the hot weather. So first decide what you need now and what you can buy later.

The second question is scale. A small vegetable patch and a farmhouse plot with a lawn and a greenhouse need very different quantities. That also decides whether to buy in bulk and how to arrange delivery: you can't fit a cubic metre of soil or long saplings in a car.

Which subcategory to choose

The section is large, so it is easiest to go by the job:

  • Planting material. Seeds for varieties and hybrids, young plants when you have no time to grow them yourself, saplings and garden plants for trees, shrubs and perennials. State the variety, the age and the type of root (bare, with a root ball, or in a container).
  • Feeding and protection. Fertilisers and plant protection: write the crop, the type of fertiliser (organic, compound, micronutrients), the pack size and what the product must work against.
  • The base. Soils and substrates: peat, topsoil, ready mixes. State the quantity in litres or cubic metres and which plants it is for.
  • Structures. Greenhouses and polytunnels: size, frame, covering (polycarbonate, film, shade net) and whether you need installation.
  • Water and care. Irrigation systems and hoses, lawn mowers and garden tools.
  • Leisure. Barbecues, grills and pools with accessories.

How it works through BlaBlaPrice

Instead of driving round garden centres and nurseries, you write one request in your own words: what, how much, in which city and by when. You can add one photo, for example of your plot or your old tools. You don't need to choose a category, the site works it out, and before sellers see the request it is checked and you are told what else is missing.

Garden sellers in your region reply in the chat: what they offer, for how much, how they will deliver. They see where their offer ranks and improve their terms, so the price often comes out better. Your phone number is hidden: you give contacts only to the one you choose. The details are on the “How it works” page.

How to compare offers for garden goods

Compare like with like. For plants, the variety, age, height and type of root; for fertilisers and soil, the composition and the quantity in kilograms or litres, not the price per bag. For greenhouses, the thickness of the profile and the density of the polycarbonate.

Ask about delivery separately: bulky items go by truck, and live plants can't be kept long in transit. If you are buying for the season, agree a deadline, or the seedlings will arrive too late.

Common mistakes

Buying “whatever is available” without thinking of the soil and the climate, taking plants without the name of the variety, not measuring the plot before ordering a greenhouse or irrigation. Another common mistake is to forget compatibility: hose fittings, the power of the pump, the power supply of the lawn mower.

How to plan the season's shopping

Split your purchases by time. What you need first — soil, fertilisers and seeds for seedlings — order in good time. Tools and irrigation systems can be bought in the season itself, while expensive things like greenhouses or pools are better compared in advance.

If your plot is far from the city, say so in your request and ask about delivery to the village or farm: bulky items are easier to send together with other orders.

Questions and answers

When is the best time to buy garden goods to get a better price?

Tools, pools and barbecues are often cheaper outside the peak season, while seeds and seedlings are best bought on time. State in your request the date you need them by, and sellers will offer their terms.

Can I order several things in one request?

Yes, if they are from one area, for example soil, fertiliser and plant pots. For different groups, such as a greenhouse and saplings, separate requests are easier, because different sellers reply.

How do I say how much soil or fertiliser I need?

Give the area or volume and what it is for: for example, “5 cubic metres of topsoil for 1,000 sq m”. Sellers will work it out and suggest how best to bring it.

Can all sellers see my phone number?

No, contacts are hidden. You pass them only to the one you choose.
