Sliding wardrobe and walk-in closet: how to order well, with measuring and fitting
Which type to choose: ready-made or made to size
A built-in sliding wardrobe uses a niche: the walls, floor and ceiling act as the carcass, so it is more economical and fills the space up to the ceiling. A freestanding wardrobe stands on its own and can move with you. A walk-in closet is not a wardrobe but a system of open shelves and rails in a separate room, often on metal frames. The choice depends on your flat and on whether you are ready to do work on the niche.
Ready-made models are quicker and simpler, but a niche rarely matches standard sizes, and gaps appear. A wardrobe made to size fills the space exactly, and can be laid out for your belongings. It takes longer and is a little more complicated: you need measuring and a design that shows the shelves, rails and drawers. For made-to-size furniture see also custom-made furniture.
How it works with BlaBlaPrice
Instead of calling measurers from several workshops, you write one request with the niche sizes and your wishes, and makers reply in the chat: what they offer, from which materials, at what price, when they will make and fit it. They can see where their offer stands and can improve their terms. It is free for the buyer, and only the one you choose sees your contacts. More: how it works.
What to put in your request
- What exactly — built-in sliding wardrobe, freestanding wardrobe, walk-in closet system, hinged wardrobe, doors only.
- Sizes — width × height × depth or room size.
- Ready-made or custom.
- Fronts — mirror, sandblasting, photo print, laminated board, number of doors.
- Interior — rails, shelves, drawers, shoe shelves, pull-out systems.
- Material — laminated board (Egger, for example), MDF, a metal system.
- Colour or finish.
- Measuring and fitting.
- City and budget.
Example: “I need a built-in sliding wardrobe for a niche of 2.4 × 2.6 m, 60 cm deep, 3 doors: 2 with mirror and one laminated board, sonoma oak colour. Inside a rail, 4 drawers and shelves. Egger board, measuring and fitting needed. Delhi, Dwarka. Budget up to ₹80,000.”
Doors and their systems
Doors are a big part of the price and quality. Look at the profile (aluminium or steel), the roller system, whether there are soft-close dampers, and the thickness of the infill. Mirrors should have a protective film on the back that holds the glass together if it breaks. Sandblasting and photo print cost extra. Ask whether the doors run quietly and do not jump off the tracks.
What to look at in offers, and which mistakes to avoid
Ask for the interior to be itemised: how many rails, shelves and drawers, and what depth. Check the board brand and thickness, the edging, the hardware. Find out who does the measuring and whether it can be done before you sign the agreement. Ask about lead times, the warranty, and what happens if the sizes don't match at fitting.
Check whether the maker takes on removal of the old wardrobe and taking away the waste. If you want lighting inside, arrange the power supply in advance.
The most common mistakes:
- Ordering by yourself without allowing for crooked walls, which are common.
- Not planning the interior for your belongings: long clothes, shoes, suitcases.
- Skimping on the door roller system.
- Not checking the sketch against the design before paying.
