Pet mating: how to find a partner with proper papers
Start with the purpose, not the price
Before looking for a partner, decide why you want a mating: to improve the breed, to get puppies or kittens with papers, or just “to have offspring”. In the last case, haste almost always does harm: without a plan for the future babies, care for the pregnant female and vet costs, it is easy to run into trouble. Breeding is best left to animals that have a pedigree and good health.
A good partner complements your animal: it corrects weak points in build and does not repeat inherited problems. So it is important to know the pedigree of both sides.
What to check in a partner
- Papers: the kennel club pedigree and registration certificate, breed recognition, show titles.
- Health: for dogs of many breeds, tests for hip dysplasia and eye and heart checks are requested; for cats, genetic tests relevant to the breed.
- Age and experience: the animal must be an adult, not in its first heat. Ask whether earlier matings were successful.
- Vaccinations and parasite treatment before mating.
- No close relationship between the pair, so as not to raise the risk of inherited defects.
Payment and agreements
The fee for mating may be money, or “a puppy from the litter” or a kitten. It is better to agree the terms before meeting and put them in writing: who pays for transport, what happens if the mating does not take place or there are no offspring, and how the pick of the litter is chosen. It is easier to talk terms in the chat until you decide on a partner.
What to put in your request
- species and breed;
- sex of the partner — male dog, bitch, tom or queen;
- papers — pedigree, club papers, titles;
- age of the partner and of your animal;
- colour, if it matters;
- health — tests, vaccinations, earlier litters;
- payment — money or a puppy from the litter;
- city.
Example: “I am looking for a pedigree fawn Pug male, aged 2–4 years, with health tests, for my pedigree female. Chennai. Payment up to ₹10,000 or a puppy from the litter.”
How to compare offers
Look at the papers and tests first, then the price. A cheap mating with an unchecked partner can cost much more later. Ask to see the original documents, or at least photos of the pedigree of both parents. If you see the animal in person, check its behaviour and condition.
