Spaying a cat or dog: how to compare clinics and prices

What the operation is and why prices differ

Spaying is an operation for females (removal of the ovaries, or of the womb with the ovaries), and neutering is for males. There is the classic approach and laparoscopy: the second is less traumatic, but needs equipment and costs differently. The final choice of method and timing is made by the vet after an examination, and your job is to describe the animal correctly and say what you expect.

How the request works on BlaBlaPrice

In a request you write the species, weight, age, city and the date you want. The site checks the text and tells you what is missing. Clinics reply in the chat: the cost of the operation, what it includes, when there is a free slot, and whether they keep the animal overnight. Reviews are shown beside the offers, and the best-value one is shown first. Only the clinic you choose gets your contacts. More on the How it works page.

What to include

  • Operation — spaying or neutering, and the method if you have a preference;
  • Animal — species and age;
  • Breed and weight — the anaesthetic dose and the price depend on them;
  • What is included — anaesthesia, tests, recovery collar, removal of stitches, follow-up check;
  • Health — heat, pregnancy, undescended testicle, chronic illness;
  • City and date;
  • Budget, if you want to name it.

Example: “Cat, 1 year old, 4 kg, healthy, not in heat. I need spaying with anaesthesia, pre-operation tests, a recovery collar and stitch removal. Jaipur, next week. Budget up to ₹3,500.”

How to compare offers

Most often the price difference comes from what is included. One clinic quotes only for the operation, another includes the examination, blood tests, anaesthesia, the after-operation collar and a repeat visit. So before choosing, ask for everything to be itemised. Ask whether the anaesthesia is monitored, who operates, whether the animal is watched after waking up, and how you can reach the doctor in the following days.

Preparing for the operation and common mistakes

Before the operation the animal is usually not fed for a set time; the clinic will give the exact hours. A mistake is to decide only by price and not ask about tests and anaesthesia, since safety matters more than a cheaper offer. The second is to ignore the state of health: heat, pregnancy and chronic illness change the approach and the price. The third is to take off the collar too early: the stitch is easily licked open, and that means extra treatment. The fourth is not asking whether the follow-up visit for checking the stitches is included, and what to do if bleeding or swelling appears at night. A good clinic leaves the doctor's contact and explains the care in the first days: rest, checking the stitch twice a day, no jumping and no baths. If you only need an examination or treatment, see veterinary care.

Questions and answers

What is the best age for spaying?

It is individual: it depends on the species, breed and health. The vet decides the timing after an examination.

What does the price of spaying include?

It varies: sometimes only the operation, sometimes also tests, anaesthesia, a collar and a follow-up check. Ask for the price to be broken down.

Laparoscopy or the classic operation?

Laparoscopy is less traumatic, but needs equipment and costs differently. The vet chooses the method.

Can the operation be done during heat?

The vet decides this, and it is usually done after an examination. Be sure to mention the condition in your request.
