Print and banner design: from menus to advertising layouts

A layout for print and a layout for screen are different tasks

Print design has technical requirements that the customer does not see but the printer feels. For print you need CMYK colours, bleed for trimming (usually a few millimetres), images of enough resolution and fonts converted to outlines. For social media or a website it is the opposite: RGB, pixels and exact banner sizes, for example 1080×1080.

So in your request say straight away where the layout will live: at a printer or online. It is the simplest way to get a file you will not have to redo.

How ordering works on BlaBlaPrice

You write one request: what to design, in what sizes, whether you have the texts and photos. Designers reply in the chat with offers that include a price, timing and examples. Some quote a price per piece, so for a series of banners it is easier to compare. Providers see where their offer ranks and improve their terms. You give your contacts only to the one you choose.

What to put in your request

  • What to design — menu, flyer, brochure, visiting card, poster, packaging, advertising banner.
  • Quantity — how many layouts, pages or banner sizes.
  • Format — A4, A5, a large banner in metres, or pixels, for example 1080×1080.
  • Content — whether the texts, photos and logo are ready or have to be created.
  • Print or online — bleed and CMYK needed, or digital files.
  • Style — an existing brand book or examples you like.
  • Timing and budget — when you need it and the sum, if you want to name one.

Example: “Mumbai, I need a restaurant menu: 8 A4 pages in our brand style, texts and photos are ready. A layout for print at a printer, then 10 more banners of 1080×1080 for Instagram. Needed in 3 days, budget up to ₹5,000.”

What to compare in the replies

First find out whether the price is per layout, per page or per hour, and how many revisions are included. Then which files you get: a PDF for print, an open source file, exports for social media. If you need to change the menu every season, the source file matters more than it seems.

Ask who takes care of print preparation. Some designers hand the layout to the printer and catch mistakes in advance, others simply give you a file. Also check that the photos and fonts are licensed: other people's pictures from the internet can cause problems.

Common mistakes

  • Giving texts with mistakes and hoping the designer will fix everything: that is separate work.
  • Using small type on a banner that is read from a distance.
  • Skipping a test print or a colour check: colours look different on screen and on paper.
  • Not checking the size before ordering a print run.

For a brand mark and identity see logo and brand identity design, and for a website UI/UX design. More about the service is on the “How it works” page.

Questions and answers

What file format does a printer need?

Most often a PDF with bleed and CMYK colours. It is best to check the exact requirements with the printer itself and pass them to the designer.

Is printing included in the design price?

Usually not, as design and printing are separate services. If you need both, say so in your request.

How long does a simple layout take?

A simple layout, such as a visiting card or a banner, is often done in a few days. Timing depends on complexity, so give the date you want in your request.

Do all providers see my phone number?

No, contacts are hidden. Only the one you choose gets them.
