Smartwatch or fitness tracker: how to choose and buy well

Watch or band: different jobs

A fitness band is light, holds its charge for a long time and counts steps, pulse and sleep, but has only the basic functions. A smartwatch is a mini computer on your wrist: calls, NFC payments, apps and often GPS. There are also sports GPS watches for running and triathlon, and kids' watches with location tracking. First decide what you need the device for, and do not overpay for features you will not use.

What to put in your request

  • type - smartwatch, fitness band, kids' GPS watch or sports watch;
  • brand and model - Apple Watch SE, Galaxy Watch, Xiaomi Smart Band, Garmin;
  • case size - in millimetres, for example 44 mm;
  • features - NFC payment, GPS, pulse, SpO2, ECG, LTE with a SIM, calls, water resistance;
  • phone compatibility - iPhone (iOS) or Android;
  • new or used and acceptable condition;
  • warranty, city and budget.

Example: “I am looking for a new Apple Watch SE, 44 mm, for an iPhone, with NFC, a heart-rate sensor and a 12-month official warranty. Delhi, budget up to ₹25,000.”

Compatibility is the main trap

Apple Watch works only with an iPhone. Watches on Wear OS and Galaxy Watch work best with Android, and some Samsung features are limited on other phones. Budget bands from Xiaomi or Huawei usually work with both platforms through an app, but the set of features differs. So be sure to write down your phone.

NFC payment has its own points too: support depends on the model, your bank and the country of sale. Ask whether payment works in India with your card.

Features worth paying for, and those that are not

  • For running and hiking, built-in GPS matters. Without it the watch uses your phone's GPS.
  • Health: pulse and SpO2 are almost everywhere, while ECG is on pricier models. Such data does not replace a doctor's advice.
  • LTE with a SIM is needed if you want to make calls without your phone, and then you pay extra for a plan.
  • Battery life: bands usually last longer than watches with a bright screen.

When you compare offers

Check the model, size, what is in the box (charger, straps) and the warranty. For used devices ask about battery health, scratches and whether the watch has been unlinked from the previous owner's account.

How it works through BlaBlaPrice

You write your request on BlaBlaPrice, and sellers reply in a chat with price, availability and delivery. They compete for your request, so terms are often better. The site shows the best offer by content first, with reviews next to it, and only the seller you choose sees your contacts. More on the “How it works” page.

If you need a phone as well, see smartphones. For straps and chargers, see phone accessories.

Questions and answers

How is a smartwatch different from a fitness band?

A watch has more features: calls, apps, often GPS. A band is lighter and holds its charge longer. Choose by the job, not by the price.

Do watches work with any phone?

Not all of them. Apple Watch needs an iPhone, and other models work better with Android. Always give your phone in the request.

How do I check a used watch?

Look at the screen, the battery, the sensors and whether the account has been unlinked. Ask for photos and a video check.

Do all sellers see my number?

No. Contacts are hidden and opened only to the seller you choose.
