How to Buy a Humidifier, Air Purifier or Dehumidifier
Three different devices that are easy to mix up
A humidifier adds moisture to dry air, for example in winter in the north or when an air conditioner runs all day. A purifier removes dust, pollen, smoke and allergens through filters. A dehumidifier is for damp places: a basement, a wardrobe, a new flat after renovation, or any home in the monsoon. There are also combined devices and air washers. First decide which problem you're solving, because there is no all-purpose solution.
How to choose a humidifier
Ultrasonic models are quiet and raise humidity fast, but need clean water, otherwise a white deposit appears. Evaporative ones (natural evaporation) regulate humidity themselves and leave no deposit, but they are louder and need new cartridges. Look at the tank volume, output in ml/h and whether there is a humidistat. For a child's room, value a quiet night mode and easy cleaning. The tank should be washed every few days, so look for a wide opening your hand fits through.
How to choose a purifier
The main things are the filter and the output. HEPA H13 traps fine particles, and a carbon filter deals with smells. Output is given as CADR in m³/h and should match the room size. For allergy sufferers it's important to change filters on time, and they can cost a lot, so ask about the price of replacement cartridges and how long they last.
Dehumidifier
Here you look at litres per day and the size of the room: a basement needs a more powerful model than a wardrobe. Ask whether it can drain condensate to a drain and switch off automatically when the tank is full. It is also worth asking about the minimum temperature at which the dehumidifier works well: in a cold basement some models lose output.
What to put in your request
- type of device: humidifier, purifier, dehumidifier or combined;
- room size: in m²;
- what for: child's room, allergy, pets, smoke, damp;
- filter or technology: HEPA H13, carbon, ioniser, UV, ultrasonic;
- output: CADR, ml/h, litres per day;
- features: night mode, humidity sensor, Wi-Fi, auto mode;
- brand and model, new or used, budget.
Example: “I need an air purifier for a 20 m² child's room in Delhi, HEPA H13 filter, quiet night mode, air quality sensor, new. Courier delivery or pickup, budget up to ₹12,000.”
