How to buy a camcorder: offers for home, weddings and events
What do you need the camera for
Camcorders are very different, so the choice starts with the job. For family videos, trips and children's parties, a compact model with good stabilisation is enough. For weddings, events and reporting you need a camera that copes with light well, has an optical zoom and a microphone input, and can take external sound. For streams and interviews, mains power and stable work without overheating matter.
What really matters in the specifications
- Resolution and frame rate: Full HD or 4K, 25/30/50/60 frames per second. Slow motion needs a high frame rate.
- Optical zoom (not digital): it does not spoil the quality. A 20x zoom lets you film from a distance.
- Stabilisation: optical is better than electronic.
- A microphone input and XLR audio for professional shooting.
- Storage: SD card, internal memory or several slots for non-stop recording.
- Battery life and the option to add a spare.
Do not forget sound: built-in microphones are fine for family videos, but for weddings and interviews a separate microphone or lapel mic is better. Also ask about the recording format and card compatibility, because they decide whether you can open the files on a computer right away.
