Electric and hybrid car repair: battery, inverter, charging
How an electric car differs for a workshop
Work here involves high voltage, and not every workshop has the training, equipment and experience. The main parts are the traction battery with its modules and BMS, the inverter, the on-board charger, the electric motor and the DC-DC converter. A hybrid adds a combustion engine and a complex interaction between the two systems.
The most common requests: a drop in range, hybrid system errors, charging faults, battery overheating, cell imbalance. Restoring a battery is often cheaper than a full replacement, but it depends on the diagnosis.
What to put in your request
- make, model and year — with the battery capacity, for example Tata Nexon EV 30.2 kWh, 2021;
- what to do — battery diagnosis, balancing, module replacement, inverter, charger, BMS, motor;
- symptoms and errors — the text of the message or the code, for example Check Hybrid System;
- battery condition — SOH in per cent, number of bars, real range;
- spare parts — new or used modules, yours or the workshop's;
- call-out or towing — whether the car can move or a tow truck is needed;
- city, timing and budget.
Example: “Tata Nexon EV 30.2 kWh, 2021. Real range has dropped to about 150 km, SOH around 70 per cent. I need battery diagnosis and balancing, or replacement of weak modules. Bengaluru, by the end of the week, budget up to ₹1 lakh.”
What to look at in the offers
The most important thing is whether the workshop works with your exact platform. A Tata or MG electric car, a Toyota hybrid and a Kia or Hyundai hybrid need different knowledge and software. Ask for examples of similar jobs and whether they have the right diagnostic equipment.
On BlaBlaPrice you describe the car and symptoms once, and specialists reply in the chat: what they will check, how they will assess the battery, and in what order they propose to repair it. The site shows the best offer by substance first, with reviews of the provider next to it. It also hints at which details are still missing from your request. Contacts stay hidden until you choose a mechanic.
For hybrids, also ask whether the workshop checks the battery cooling: a clogged filter or fan sometimes causes overheating and errors. Sometimes the problem is solved by servicing, not by replacing expensive modules.
What affects the cost
- the condition of the battery: a few weak modules or widespread ageing of cells;
- new, used or repacked modules;
- how hard the part is to reach and the cost of the components;
- the need for a tow truck and the number of diagnostic jobs.
Add to the request a photo of the dashboard with the error, or a screenshot from the diagnostic app, if you have one: this makes it easier for workshops to assess the problem.
Common mistakes
Do not trust only the indicator on the dashboard: the real battery condition is seen from the BMS data. Do not buy a “reconditioned” battery without a test report. Do not hand high-voltage parts to non-specialists, as it is dangerous. And do not wait until an error turns into a breakdown.
Some problems are not related to the power side, and then auto electrical repair, car computer diagnostics or suspension and brake repair will help. All services are in the section “Car & motorcycle servicing”.
