Fireplace, stove or chimney: how to choose and buy without overpaying
Stove or fireplace: where to start
The first question is what the heating is for. A cast-iron or steel stove quickly warms a garage, workshop or farmhouse room. A fireplace insert with a glass door creates atmosphere and partly heats the room. A bio-fireplace needs no chimney but gives more decoration than real heat. Decide the main purpose first, and only then look at models.
Power and fuel
Power in kW is chosen for the area or volume of the room: a 40 sq m garage needs one figure, a house with high ceilings a very different one. Don't buy “with a margin” blindly: an over-powered stove runs on minimum all the time, gets dirty faster and burns worse. Plan the fuel in advance too: firewood, coal, pellets, briquettes. Some models are made for long burning from a single load.
The chimney is a separate matter
A chimney often costs as much as the stove itself, and it is not the place to save. Sandwich pipes (insulated) resist condensation and are safe where they pass through the ceiling and roof. Single-wall pipes are cheaper but only suit use inside the room. The diameter must match the stove outlet (for example 150 mm), and the height and number of bends affect the draught. Passing through the ceiling and roof needs special parts, so this is where help from a specialist is often needed.
What to put in your request
- What you need — fireplace insert, stove, bio-fireplace, chimney system, pipes.
- Fuel — wood, coal, pellets, gas, electricity.
- Power or area — 8 kW or a 40 sq m garage.
- Material — cast iron, steel; for the chimney, stainless steel and its thickness.
- Chimney details — diameter, height, sandwich or single-wall.
- Features — glass door, hotplate, water jacket.
- Installation — with a roof outlet or without.
- City and budget.
Example: “I need a long-burning steel stove of 8 kW with a hotplate for a 60 sq m hill-station cottage near Shimla, and a 150 mm sandwich chimney about 6 m high, passing through the roof. I need installation. Budget up to ₹40,000.”
How search works on BlaBlaPrice
Stoves and chimneys are sold by specialist shops and workshops, and a set is often put together from several items. You write one request, and sellers answer in the chat with offers: what exactly is included, the price, availability, delivery and installation. Each seller sees where their option ranks and adjusts the terms. The best offer is shown first, and the seller's reviews are next to it. Your phone number is not sent to everyone. How it works is explained on the How it works page.
How to compare offers
Check whether the price of the stove includes the flue collar, door, brick lining or casing, and damper. For the chimney, compare the stainless steel thickness and the type of insulation. Ask about the warranty on the firebox and the required distances to combustible walls. Leave the installation of a stove or fireplace to an experienced fitter: a badly made chimney is dangerous.
