Interior doors: how to order a complete set and not overpay
Price per leaf or per set
Interior doors are often advertised at the price of the leaf alone. But a ready door also needs a frame, casing, extension strips, hinges, a lock and a handle. So only complete sets can be compared. Say plainly in your request whether you want it “turnkey” or “leaf only”, and ask for a breakdown of what the total is made of.
Material and finish
- MDF with PVC or eco-veneer — the most common, easy to care for and available in many colours.
- Natural veneer — the look of wood, but needs careful handling.
- Solid wood — strong, but heavier and costlier.
- Paintable — primed leaves that you paint in your own colour.
- Glass — inserts or full glass, usually toughened.
Think separately about the design. Swing doors are the simplest, sliding doors save space but need a free wall or a pocket, and flush concealed doors become part of the wall with no visible frame and need the opening to be prepared.
Size and wall thickness
Standard leaves are 600, 700, 800 or 900 mm wide at a height of about 2000 mm. But real openings often differ. Measure the width and height of the opening and the thickness of the wall: they decide the size of the frame and whether extension strips are needed. In old houses the opening may be crooked, so it is better to leave the measuring to a fitter. In the monsoon, wood swells, so ask how the door is protected against humidity.

- Sizes — leaf or opening size, wall thickness.
- Type — swing, sliding, concealed, glass, folding.
- Material and finish — MDF, veneer, paintable, glass.
- Colour — for example white.

Mistakes that are easy to avoid
Not stating the opening side: left- or right-hand doors matter for the frame and hinges. Comparing doors of the same colour from different makers without samples: shades can differ. Forgetting thresholds and extensions when the wall is thicker than the standard frame. Agreeing on fitting after the purchase rather than before.
