TV box or media player: how to choose and buy well

What do you need the box for

A media player turns an ordinary TV into a “smart” one: YouTube, Netflix, IPTV, films from a flash drive or a home server. But different jobs need different hardware. For YouTube and streaming a modest model is enough, for 4K HDR films or games you need a stronger one, and for IPTV a stable Wi-Fi connection or an Ethernet port matters.

So in your request say right away what you plan to watch. The seller will pick a variant that is neither too weak nor excessive.

What to put in your request

  • model - brand and exact name, for example Xiaomi Mi Box S 2, or simply “something similar”;
  • specifications - RAM and built-in storage (4/32 GB), 4K and HDR, Wi-Fi standard, certified Android TV;
  • what for - IPTV, YouTube, Netflix, Kodi, games;
  • set-up - whether you want the box with apps already installed;
  • new or used;
  • warranty - official or from the seller, and for how long;
  • delivery - courier or pickup, and your city;
  • budget, if you want to name one.

Example: “I am looking for a new Android TV box with 4/32 GB, 4K HDR, for IPTV and YouTube, preferably already set up with streaming apps. Official warranty. Courier delivery to Hyderabad, budget up to ₹5,000.”

Pitfalls worth asking about

The most common disappointment is “Android TV” on the box that is really ordinary Android without certification. Such a box may not play Netflix in high quality, or some apps may not work. So ask whether the device is Google-certified and which system version it runs.

Two more things: is there an Ethernet port, if your Wi-Fi is unstable, and does the device support the codecs you need. For HDR on an older TV, check that it has a suitable HDMI input.

About a box that is “set up”: it is fine when the seller installs popular apps. But firmware with pirated content may contain dubious software, so it is better to ask for a clean system and install what you need yourself.

How to compare offers

The price of the same model can differ between sellers, but compare what comes with it too: warranty, dispatch time, and whether the original power adapter and remote are included. With used boxes, take only those where the seller shows that everything works and is ready to confirm it with photos or video.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

You write your request in your own words on BlaBlaPrice, it is checked, and electronics sellers reply in a chat. They compete for your request, so terms often improve. The best offer by content is shown first, with reviews of the seller beside it. Your phone number is hidden, and you hand over contacts only to the seller you choose. Details on the “How it works” page.

If you are considering a new screen instead of a box, look at TVs. You will find a wall mount, cable or remote in TV accessories.

Questions and answers

How is a TV box different from a Smart TV?

A box adds smart features to an older TV and is often updated faster than a built-in system. If the TV is already smart, a box is for better speed or apps it does not have.

How much memory is enough?

For YouTube and streaming 2/16 GB is usually enough, for 4K and games 4/32 GB or more is better. Write what you plan to do in your request and sellers will advise.

Can I take a used box?

You can, but ask for photos or a video of it working and check whether the power adapter and remote are included. The warranty on used items can be short or missing, so ask about it separately.

Do sellers see my phone number?

No, contacts are hidden. You give them only to the seller you choose.
