Medical equipment hire for care at home
Who needs it and for how long
Hiring medical equipment helps when someone in the family is recovering after surgery or an injury, when you are looking after a bedridden relative, or when you need the equipment for only a few weeks. Buying an expensive hospital bed or an oxygen concentrator for a short period is not worth it.
Before you hire, discuss your choice with a doctor or nurse who knows the patient's condition. This is especially true for oxygen concentrators: the doctor, not the hire service, decides how much oxygen is needed.
What to put in your request
- what to hire — wheelchair, walker, crutches, hospital bed, oxygen concentrator, anti-bedsore mattress;
- specifications — electric or manual control, functions, oxygen flow;
- patient details — weight, height, condition, for example weight 110 kg; this affects the load rating;
- hire period — a week, a month, two months;
- set — mattress, side rails, commode attachment;
- delivery to your home and assembly on site;
- deposit, city and budget per month or in total.
Example: “I need a hospital bed with electric control and an anti-bedsore mattress for a patient weighing 110 kg. Hire for 2 months, Jayanagar, Bengaluru. With delivery and assembly at home, budget up to ₹6,000 per month.”
How to compare offers
Check that the maximum weight the item can bear is stated: for heavier patients this is critical. For a bed, ask about the number of adjustable sections and the type of control. For an oxygen concentrator, ask about the maximum flow and whether servicing is available.
Also ask who cleans and disinfects the equipment between hires, and whether it is checked and working. Find out the terms for extending the hire and for return: will they collect the equipment themselves.
For a wheelchair, it matters whether it folds, whether it fits through your doors, and how wide the seat is. For walkers and crutches, look for height adjustment. If you need the equipment urgently, say so in your request: providers will tell you whether they can deliver today.
Common mistakes
- Choosing by price without checking the patient's weight and dimensions.
- Not measuring doors and passages: the bed or wheelchair must fit through to your home.
- Not agreeing on assembly and on training in how to use it.
- Forgetting that the hire may run longer, and not asking the price for extra weeks.
