Ski and snowboard hire at the resort: how to choose a set
Fitting starts with height, weight and skill level
Skis or a snowboard are chosen not for looks but for your measurements: height, weight, boot size and ability. A beginner needs softer gear that forgives mistakes, and an experienced skier needs stiffer, faster gear. So always write your level in the request: “beginner”, “intermediate” or “confident”.
Boots need separate attention: they must fit well, or a day on the slope turns into torture. If your foot is between sizes, give the foot length in centimetres right away.
What to put in your request
- what to hire — skis, snowboard, full set with boots and poles, boots only;
- height, weight, boot size, level — for example, height 175 cm, boot size UK 8, beginner;
- number of sets — adults and children separately;
- period — dates and number of days, for example 5 days from 3 January;
- resort or town — Gulmarg, Manali (Solang Valley), Auli, Kufri;
- gear class — for beginners, intermediate, carving or freeride;
- helmet, goggles, clothing — whether you need them too;
- delivery (for example, to your hotel), deposit and budget per day.
Example: “I need a ski set for an adult: height 175 cm, boot size UK 8, level beginner. With a helmet. Gulmarg, 5 days from 3 January, delivery to the hotel. Budget up to ₹1,500 per day.”
How to compare offers
Check what is included in the daily price: skis only, or boots and poles too. Look at the age and condition of the gear: waxed and sharpened edges and intact bindings directly affect safety. Ask whether you can change the size during the hire if the boots pinch.
Also pay attention to pick-up and return times: shops often work until a set hour, and a day is counted from hand-over. For several days, discounts for longer hire are sometimes available.
Common mistakes
- Taking gear that is “cooler” than your level: it is harder to control.
- Not trying the boots on at hand-over and silently putting up with discomfort.
- Not giving your arrival date: in peak season, around New Year and the holidays, choice shrinks fast.
- Forgetting a helmet for a child.
