Be a model for beauty services: cheaper treatments or just pay for materials
What a model is and why it can save you money
A model is a person on whom a beauty professional practises a treatment: during training, for a portfolio, or just to build skill. In return, the client gets the service at a discount, for the cost of materials only, or sometimes free. It can be a haircut or colour, lash extensions, a manicure, makeup or brows.
The key thing to understand is that you pay not with money but with your time, your trust and sometimes photos for a portfolio. So the expectations of both the model and the professional are a little different here.
What to put in your request
- Treatment — the exact service you want, for example a haircut and colour.
- Model details — hair length and condition, state of nails, skin or lashes.
- Who the model is — a woman, a man or a child, with the age.
- Date — convenient days and times, for example weekdays after 6 pm.
- Area you can travel to.
- Payment — free, materials only, or a small amount.
- Level of the professional — whether you accept a trainee or need an experienced one.
- Portfolio photos — whether you agree to be photographed.
Example: “I'm ready to be a model for a haircut and colour. Shoulder-blade-length natural hair, woman, 30 years old. Bengaluru, Indiranagar, weekdays after 6 pm. I'll pay for materials only, I'm fine with portfolio photos, and the stylist can be a trainee.”
What to watch out for
A free treatment from a beginner carries a risk, and it is worth weighing up. Ask who supervises the work: a mentor or trainer nearby is a good sign. Ask to see earlier work if there is any, and talk honestly about what happens if you are not happy with the result.
- Whether the professional has the materials, and what exactly you are paying for.
- How long the treatment will take: training sessions are often longer than a normal visit.
- Whether hypoallergenic products are available, and whether a patch test is done if you have sensitive skin.
- Where it takes place: a salon, a classroom or at home.
Common mistakes
People agree to a complex treatment, such as a drastic colour change or extensions, with a complete beginner. They don't check whether photos will be taken or where they will be posted. They don't ask about the safety of the products and hygiene. Simpler services, such as a manicure or brows, are good for a first experience.
