How to buy a motorcycle helmet: type, size, certification
The helmet type for your style
A helmet is a motorcyclist's main safety item, so do not look for “anything cheap”. A full face helmet protects best, especially the chin, and damps noise well. A modular helmet has a flip-up chin bar: it is handy in the city and for touring, but is slightly more complex in construction. An open face (jet) helmet is light, though it does not protect the chin. Off-road helmets have an extended peak and open eyes for goggles, while adventure helmets combine a peak and a visor.
A full face helmet is usually chosen for fast riding, a modular for touring and daily rides, an open face for short city trips and scooters.
Size, certification, options
- Size is set by head circumference: measure with a tailor's tape at forehead level. The helmet should fit snugly without pressure.
- Certification: ECE 22.06 is the current European standard, and you still meet ECE 22.05, DOT and SNELL. In India a helmet must also carry the ISI mark. The certification must be on the helmet itself.
- Shell material: thermoplastic is cheaper, fibreglass or carbon is lighter.
- Options: a sun visor, Pinlock against fogging, preparation for an intercom.
What to put in your request
- Helmet type — full face, modular, open face, off-road, adventure.
- Size — XS–XXL and head circumference, for example M (57–58 cm).
- Brand — for example Shoei Neotec 3.
- Certification — for example ECE 22.06.
- Options — sun visor, Pinlock, intercom readiness.
- Colour or graphics.
- New or used, delivery city, budget.
Example: “I need a new modular helmet, size M (57–58 cm), with a sun visor and an ECE 22.06 certificate, matt black, preferably Shoei Neotec 3. Delivery to Mumbai, budget up to ₹24,000.”
Comparison and warnings
Size charts differ between brands, and the shape of your head (more oval or more round) also affects the fit. So, if you can, try the helmet on before buying, or ask about the return terms if the size does not fit. Ask the seller directly about the ECE certificate and the year of manufacture.
It is better not to buy a used helmet: after impacts, even unnoticed ones, the inner foam may have lost its ability to absorb a blow, and you cannot see this from outside. Helmets also have a service life: makers advise replacing them after roughly a few years, depending on use.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You write one request, and sellers answer in chat: the model, the size in stock, the price, delivery. The platform shows the best one for your request first, with reviews of the seller next to it. Contacts stay hidden and are opened only to the seller you choose. More in how it works.
With a helmet you will find useful helmet liners, motorcycle jackets and motorcycle gloves.
