Oils for Motorcycles, Scooters, Quad Bikes and Outboard Motors
2T or 4T: this is where the choice starts
Two-wheeler engines come in two fundamentally different types. In two-stroke engines (many scooters, chainsaws, outboard motors) the oil is mixed with the fuel or fed by a separate system. In four-stroke engines it goes into the crankcase and works as in a car, but with its own requirements. Do not mix them up: 2T oil in a 4T engine, or the reverse, does harm. There are also special oils for two-stroke outboard motors and chainsaws, made for high revs.
Why motorcycle oil is not the same as car oil
On most motorcycles the oil is shared by the engine, the clutch and the gearbox. Fuel-saving car oils contain additives that can make a wet clutch slip. That is what the JASO standard is for: MA and MA2 suit a wet clutch, MB is for scooters with a variator. For two-strokes there are classes FB, FC, FD, and for outboard motors TC-W3.
What to put in your request
- Engine type — 2T or 4T;
- Machine — motorcycle, scooter, quad bike, chainsaw, outboard motor, plus the make and model;
- Viscosity — for example 10W-40 or 20W-50;
- Standard — JASO MA2, TC-W3, API;
- Type of base — synthetic, semi-synthetic, mineral;
- Brand, for example Motul 7100;
- Quantity — 1 L bottles, cans;
- Delivery city and budget.
Example: “I need four-stroke oil 10W-40 JASO MA2, semi-synthetic, for a motorcycle, 4 bottles of 1 L, preferably Motul 7100 or an equivalent. Delivery to Ahmedabad, budget up to ₹4,500.”
How to compare offers
Check that the viscosity, the JASO standard and the type of base match in all the offers. For a sports or heavily loaded bike, synthetic matters more; for a small scooter on daily rides, semi-synthetic is often enough. Check that it is the original packaging with a hologram or batch code, because fake oils turn up in the market. Compare the price per litre.
For chainsaws and outboard motors, find out the oil-to-fuel mixing ratio: it depends on the oil and the engine, and is given in the manual. One more point is the gearbox: on scooters with a variator, the final drive often has its own gear oil, bought separately from the engine oil. So if you are buying oil for the whole machine, list every unit in your request.
