Motorcycle Trousers: Textile, Leather, Riding Jeans — How to Choose
Trousers for the way you ride
The most common options are textile trousers, leather ones, riding jeans, off-road trousers and rain overtrousers worn over normal clothes. Textile is versatile and suits both touring and the city. Leather gives the best abrasion protection, but it is heavier and hotter. Riding jeans look like ordinary ones and are comfortable at the office or at a tea stall, but their protection depends on the aramid reinforcement. Off-road trousers are light and loose, made for enduro.
Season and protection
- Summer trousers have perforation or mesh; in the Indian heat it matters that they breathe.
- All-season trousers have a removable liner and a membrane.
- Winter trousers are insulated as well, which is useful in north India and the hills.
- Built-in armour: knees and hips; look at the CE level (1 or 2) and whether the knee pad height can be adjusted.
- Fit: the knee pads must line up with your knees when you sit on the bike, not when you stand.
What to put in your request
- Type of trousers — textile, leather, riding jeans, off-road, overtrousers.
- Season — summer, all-season, winter.
- Size — S–XXL, EU or the 34/32 format (waist and length).
- Protection — knees, hips, CE level.
- Men’s or women’s.
- Brand, for example Alpinestars.
- New or used, delivery city, budget.
Example: “I need new women’s summer motorcycle trousers with mesh, size M, with CE knee and hip armour. Alpinestars preferred. Delivery to Jaipur, budget up to ₹10,000.”
How to compare offers
The leg length and the inside-leg length are critical: the trousers must not ride up when you sit on the bike. Ask for the garment’s measurements, not just the letters. Check whether knee and hip armour is included in the price, because it is sometimes sold separately. For riding jeans, ask what the reinforcements in the risk areas are made of and whether they are real, not just decorative.
Check used trousers for scuffs and seams: they are the first to fail after a crash. Also look at the zips and the waistband.
Think about how they combine with a jacket: if you plan to ride in a set, many makers offer trousers with a zip to join them to the jacket at the waist. This is useful on the road, because the jacket does not ride up at the back and does not let the wind in. For cold weather, consider overtrousers: they go on and off quickly, and usually cost less than separate winter trousers.

These go well with trousers: a motorcycle jacket, motorcycle boots and motorcycle armour.
