The alternator: what sets one apart from another
For an Opel Astra H with the 1.7 CDTI diesel, an alternator is chosen by more than the model. The output in amps, the pulley type, the maker and the engine bay setup (with or without air conditioning) all matter. Alternators look alike from outside, and then after fitting you find the pulley is wrong or the connector does not match.
In the request write the engine, the year, whether there is air conditioning and, if possible, the number from the old alternator. This is the shortest way to an exact offer.
How to check an alternator from a breaker
Ask whether it was tested on a bench, what mileage the donor had and whether any bearing noise can be heard. A good breaker will gladly send a video of it running or a photo of the plate on the body. Check whether the pulley, voltage regulator and brushes are included in the price, or whether they have already been repaired.
When comparing, tell a used alternator sold “as is” from a reconditioned one. A reconditioned unit usually costs more, but it has new bearings and brushes and the repairer’s warranty.
A charging warning light that comes on while driving does not always mean a faulty alternator. The cause can be the belt, the tensioner, the terminals or the wiring. So have it diagnosed before buying, to avoid replacing the wrong thing. If the alternator really is the problem, ask your mechanic whether to replace the drive belt and tensioner at the same time: removing them a second time costs more than doing it once together.
