Vehicle and heavy equipment hire: from a car to a crane
Job first, machine second
Heavy equipment is hired for a specific job, and the wrong machine can wreck your schedule or make you overpay. An excavator for a cable trench and one for a foundation pit are not the same thing, and a crane lifting slabs must have a lifting capacity with a margin. So describe the job: what you need to carry or lift, over what distance and to what height.
This section covers many types. For transport: trucks, low-loaders, long-load vehicles, tippers and grain trucks, trailers. For loading work: loaders, cranes, aerial platforms. For earthworks: excavators and bulldozers, auger drills. For farm work: tractors and combine harvesters, mini tractors and power tillers. There are also cars, minibuses, wedding limousines and cabs for taxi work.
For cars, minibuses and limousines for an event, give the date, route, number of passengers, and whether you need a driver, decoration or waiting during the event. For a wedding convoy, book well in advance, because few vehicles are free in the season.
If you are not sure which machine you need, describe the job in words and ask for advice on the model: experienced hire companies can usually tell you quickly whether a compact machine will do or you need a heavier one.
What to put in your request
- Type of equipment and key specifications: lifting capacity, boom reach, bucket volume, lifting height.
- The job — what exactly has to be done, the volume and the conditions: soil, access, height limits.
- Dates and duration — start, hours or days, shifts.
- Location — city or address, condition of the approach road, movement around the site.
- With or without a driver — heavy equipment usually needs an operator.
- Fuel and delivery — who pays, transport on a trailer.
- Documents — whether you need a GST invoice or an agreement.
Example: “I need a mini excavator with an operator to dig a 40 m trench 1.2 m deep, clay soil. Pune, Hinjewadi, for 2 days from Monday. Delivery of the machine included. Budget up to ₹40,000.”
How to compare offers
Heavy equipment is charged in different ways: per hour, per shift, per volume of work. Ask directly whether the price includes the time to bring the machine (heavy equipment often has a minimum booking of several hours), the operator, fuel, transport and idle time. For cars, check the daily kilometre limit, the deposit, the insurance and the age of the vehicle. Ask for photos and check that the machine has a valid fitness certificate and papers.
If you take a vehicle without a driver, make sure you hold the right category of driving licence and know the terms on damage. For expensive equipment, find out who is responsible for a breakdown during use.
A crane or an aerial platform needs a qualified operator and the right permits; for goods transport you need the paperwork for the load and, if needed, cargo insurance. Ask the hire company to confirm that the machine is in good working order and the driver holds the right licence and has experience.
For long-distance transport, compare not only the rate per kilometre but also the charges for waiting, the driver's overnight stay, fuel and unloading. This often changes the total more than the difference in the rate per kilometre.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
Instead of calling listings, you write a request on BlaBlaPrice, and hire companies reply in the chat: the machine, rate, terms, delivery. The system shows first the offer that fits best, with reviews visible next to it. Hire companies see where they stand among the others and can improve their terms. Contacts stay hidden until you decide who to give them to. More details on the page “How it works”.
