Car window tint and sun protection: how to order at a good price
Film, a complete tint job or a removable shade
First decide the format. If you simply need film, you buy a roll and fit it yourself or give it to a fitter. If you want a result without fuss, order a complete tint job: the fitter cuts the film to the glass, cleans it carefully and applies it without dust and bubbles. The third option is a removable tint or sun visors that you can take off when not needed.
What affects the cost
- Type of film: metallised, ceramic, heat-rejecting. Heat-rejecting and ceramic block heat better, but cost more.
- Which windows: the rear part costs differently from all the glass or a strip on the windscreen.
- Difficulty of the glass: curved glass on some models needs the film shrunk with a hot-air gun.
- Reputation of the fitter and the bay: a clean closed bay without draught gives a neater result.
- Removing the old film, if there is one, is paid separately.
What to put in your request
- What you need — a complete tint job, a roll of film, a removable tint, a visor;
- Car model and year: the glass shape depends on it;
- Which windows — rear part, front side windows, strip on the windscreen, all;
- Darkness — light transmission in per cent, if you know it;
- Film — brand or type;
- Installation — with fitting or only the material;
- Roll size, if you are buying only film;
- City (even the area) and budget.
Example: “Toyota Camry, I need ceramic film on the rear windows, a medium-dark shade that the current rules allow, fitted in a closed bay. Mumbai, Andheri, budget up to ₹6,000.”
The law and sensible limits
Before ordering, find out the current rules on light transmission for the front glass: there are limits for the windscreen and front side windows, and a film that is too dark can cause trouble at a check. The rear part usually has more freedom, but the exact limits are best checked in the current rules. A good fitter can also tell you what is allowed.
How to compare offers
Look at the specifics: the brand and line of the film, the warranty on the fitting (against peeling, bubbles, colour change), the time to finish, and whether removing the old tint is included. Ask for photos of work or reviews. A suspiciously cheap offer is worth checking: the film may be of lower quality or without a warranty.
If you buy only film, compare the width and length of the roll: different sizes have a different price per metre.
