Bread maker: how to choose and buy well
How much bread and for whom
Bread makers differ in the maximum weight of the loaf: usually from 500 to 1500 grams. For one or two people a 700–900 g loaf is enough, and for a family that finishes a loaf in a day, look for a 1000–1500 g model. The shape of the pan matters too: a vertical one gives a tall “classic” loaf, a horizontal one looks like an ordinary sandwich loaf and is easier to slice.
What the extra functions give you
- Delayed start: put the ingredients in the evening and have fresh bread in the morning.
- A dispenser for nuts and raisins adds them at the right moment of kneading.
- A gluten-free programme is needed if someone in the family has a reason for it.
- Modes for jam, pizza dough, dumpling dough and yoghurt are for those who want more than bread.
- A choice of crust colour and loaf size.
Don't pay extra for 25 programmes if you will use three. More useful details: whether the baking pan can be bought separately and whether a measuring cup and spoon come in the box.
Look at noise and weight too: a light model can “walk” across the counter during kneading. The length of the cable and a glass window also affect convenience.

How to compare offers
Compare the same loaf weight and the same set of programmes. Ask about the coating of the pan and whether a new one can be ordered separately: it is the most vulnerable part. Also check whether a kneading paddle comes in the box, and a spare one, because it wears out over time.
With a used one, first ask about the condition of the pan and the paddle, whether the drive jams and whether the coating is damaged. Ask for a video that shows the dough being kneaded.
