Crane truck services: how to order and compare prices
What a crane truck is for
A crane truck (often called a hydra crane) is a lorry with a built-in crane. You need it where an ordinary flatbed will not help: unloading concrete rings and slabs, lifting blocks onto a plot, moving a container or a site cabin, lifting materials onto a roof, working with a basket at height. The crane takes over part of the loaders’ work and speeds up unloading.
On BlaBlaPrice you describe the load once, and crane truck owners reply in the chat with offers: which vehicle, the price, when they can come. Each sees where their offer ranks, so terms often improve. It is free for the customer.
Weight, reach and lifting capacity
The most important thing is not to get the capacity wrong. The crane’s stated lifting capacity depends on the boom’s reach: the farther the load is from the vehicle, the less the crane can lift. So state the weight of the heaviest piece and the distance it must be placed, or the height.
Ask separately about the length of the body itself. Long loads, such as pipes or beams, need a suitable bed. If the load is heavier or the reach is long, a more powerful vehicle is needed, and its price will be different.
What to put in your request
- The load — concrete rings, slabs, blocks, a container, a vehicle, building materials.
- Weight — of the heaviest piece and of the whole load.
- Dimensions — length and sizes.
- From where to where — yard, warehouse, plot.
- Type of work — transport only, lifting onto a roof, unloading, work with a basket.
- Date — day and time.
- Duration — hours of work or number of trips.
- Access — narrow street, overhead wires, soft ground, width of the gate.
- Budget — if you want to name one.
Example: “I need a crane truck on Thursday morning: move 6 concrete rings of 1.5 tonnes each from a yard in Hinjewadi to a plot in Wakad, Pune, 2 trips. Narrow entrance, wires over the plot. Budget up to ₹6,000.”
How to compare offers
Crane trucks are usually charged by the hour including travel to you, and the minimum booking is often several hours. So compare the total sum for the whole job, not the rate. Ask whether the time for slinging the load is included, whether a rigger and slings are provided, and whether idle time is charged.
Ask about the crane’s model and lifting capacity, and check that it suits your load with a margin. Ask also whether the crane operator is properly trained and experienced. Reviews of the provider are shown beside the offers.
Common mistakes
Underestimating the weight, so the crane cannot lift it. Forgetting about power lines that limit the boom. Not allowing for soft ground: the outriggers need a firm base. Not mentioning a narrow approach where the vehicle will not fit. After this you end up paying for waiting time or a second vehicle.
For ordinary transport without a crane, see freight transport, and for vehicles that cannot move, tow truck services. There are also loaders and movers. All the options are in the “Transport and delivery” section.
