Customs clearance of cargo: how to find a broker and compare prices
What exactly you are ordering
Customs clearance is not one service but a set of steps. Some people need only the declaration, others need full support: choosing the HS code, checking documents, certification, a warehouse and delivery from the port or airport. That is why prices from different brokers differ so much. One counts only filing the declaration, another takes everything “turnkey”.
On BlaBlaPrice you describe the shipment once, and brokers and agents reply with offers in the chat: what is included in the price, the time, and what is needed from you. They see where their offer ranks and improve their terms. It is free for the customer, and your contacts stay hidden until you choose a provider.
What affects cost and time
First, the direction: import, export, transit or temporary import each have different procedures. Then the goods and their HS code, on which the duty rates, GST and any need for permits depend. The customs office and the country of origin also matter: under certain free trade agreements a preferential rate applies, but a certificate of origin is needed.
Volume is counted separately: pallets or a container. Customs duty, GST and fees are payments to the government, not the broker’s service. So ask for the offer to separate what is charged for the work from what must be paid to the government.
What to put in your request
- Import or export — or transit, temporary import.
- The goods — what they are, and the HS code if you know it.
- Size of the shipment — pallets, weight, volume or number of containers.
- The country — of origin or destination.
- Customs office or city — where clearance is needed.
- Value of the goods — per the invoice.
- Documents — which you already have: invoice, bill of lading or airway bill, certificates, certificate of origin.
- Scope of services — only the declaration or full support with certification, logistics, warehouse.
- Budget — if you want to name one.
Example: “Import of auto parts from China, 2 pallets, 800 kg, invoice $12,000. I have the invoice and the bill of lading, HS code 8708. Clearance in Chennai, and I need the declaration and delivery to a warehouse. Budget for services up to ₹12,000.”
How to compare brokers
Ask who files the declaration and who is responsible for errors in it. Find out whether there is a contract and invoices, whether choosing the code is included, and whether extra permits are needed. Learn the real time: from submitting the documents to release of the cargo. Reviews of the provider are shown beside the offers, and for customs, experience matters more than a small saving.
Common mistakes
A wrong HS code, which changes the rates and can lead to penalties. Understating the value on the invoice. Documents arriving late, so the cargo sits in a warehouse where storage is charged separately. Not checking in advance who pays for the delay.
If you need to carry the goods onward after clearance, see freight transport, and for small consignments, courier delivery. A general overview is in the “Transport and delivery” section. Check important decisions on the rules with the broker or a lawyer.
