What exactly needs to be moved
The load decides both the vehicle and who carries it. A small box, a sofa, an office store, a machine or passengers are different jobs with different prices. So the description of the load is the most important thing you write in the request.
For belongings and furniture between cities, freight transport works. For a house move with loaders and packing there is home and office removals. If you only need things lifted and carried, look for loaders and movers. For documents and small parcels, courier delivery is convenient.
Special cases
Bulky equipment is lifted by a crane truck, and a broken-down car is moved by a tow truck or car carrier. For trips by people there are passenger transport and long-distance routes, and for parcels abroad a separate delivery service. Cargo across a border needs customs clearance. You can also hire a driver or find fellow travellers.
What to put in your request
- what to move — a list of items or the type of load, weight, dimensions, number of pieces;
- from where to where — full addresses or cities, the floor and whether there is a lift at both ends;
- date and time — when loading is, or whether the timing is flexible;
- vehicle — a small pickup, a truck, a refrigerated van, a covered or side-loading body;
- loaders and packing — whether needed, how many people, whether furniture must be dismantled;
- special points — fragile items, oversized load, temperature control, insurance of the goods;
- budget, if you want to name one.
How to compare offers
The price of transport comes from distance, time, the type of vehicle and the loaders' work. Some carriers charge by the hour with a minimum time, others by route. Ask whether waiting time, standing time, carrying up floors, packing material and dismantling furniture are included. Find out the minimum charge and what happens if loading drags on.
For valuable goods, find out about insurance and liability for damage. Ask whether the vehicle matches the size and weight of your load, and ask the carrier for a written agreement or receipt. For international shipments, check the documents, the border timelines and who pays for clearance.
Tips that save your nerves
Warn the loaders about narrow stairs, no lift or lanes a truck can't enter. Pack and label boxes beforehand, and photograph fragile items before loading. Don't pay the full sum up front: usually an advance is agreed and the balance is paid after delivery. For a house move, make a list of items so nothing gets lost.
Ask about contact: whether you get the driver's number and whether you will be told when they leave and arrive. If the load needs special conditions (cold, protection from vibration), say so plainly in the request, because an ordinary van won't do.
Compare two schemes: a vehicle just for you or a shared load. Shared is usually cheaper, but slower and less flexible.
