Furniture assembly: wardrobes, kitchens, beds — hire a professional
Why furniture assembly is priced so differently
A flat-pack TV unit can be put together in an hour, while a modular kitchen with eight units, a built-in sink and appliances takes a full day. Sliding wardrobes are a case of their own: the sliding doors need precisely adjusted tracks, and large cabinets have to be levelled. That is why the professional usually quotes per piece or for the whole job, not “per hour”.
On BlaBlaPrice you describe what needs assembling once, and professionals reply in the chat with a price and a date. Each of them sees where their offer stands, so terms improve. It is free for buyers, and your contacts stay hidden until you choose.
Types of furniture and how hard they are
Simple cabinets with an instruction sheet: chests of drawers, shelving units, writing desks. More complex: sliding wardrobes, large wardrobes, beds with a lift-up storage mechanism. The hardest category is the kitchen: it needs marking out, fixing wall units to the wall, cutting openings for the sink or hob, and fitting the chimney (hood).
Upholstered furniture such as a sofa or an armchair is usually easier to assemble, but there are modular and corner designs. If the furniture was made to order, ask whether the maker has fitters, because sometimes their work is included in the price.
What to include in your request
- What to assemble — sliding wardrobe, kitchen, bed, sofa, kids' room, office furniture.
- Quantity or scope — pieces or units, size, for example a 2.4 m sliding wardrobe.
- Maker — a flat-pack brand, ready-to-assemble from a shop, or made to order.
- Extra work — wall units, countertop cutting, sink, appliances, dismantling old furniture.
- Area — city and neighbourhood.
- When — date and time.
- Furniture on site — already at home, or it still has to be carried up.
- Budget — if you want to name one.
Example: “Delhi, Dwarka: assemble a modular kitchen with 8 units, hang the wall cabinets and cut in the sink. The furniture is already at home, the walls are concrete. On Saturday. Budget up to ₹3,000.”
How to compare offers
Check what is included in the price: only the assembly, or also fixing to walls, removal of old furniture and taking away the packaging. Ask whether the professional takes on tricky items such as the countertop and appliances, and whether they bring their own tools. For wall cabinets the wall type matters: fixings are different for concrete and for gypsum board.
Also ask whether there is a warranty on the work. Reviews next to the offer help you find someone who works neatly in a home and does not leave scratches on the furniture and floor.
Common mistakes
Not checking that all the parts are there before the professional arrives: if fittings are missing, the visit is wasted. Not saying that the furniture has not yet been carried upstairs. Not mentioning anything unusual about the walls. Not checking that everything works before signing off: doors, drawers, mechanisms.
After assembly there is usually rubbish and dust: for cleaning there are housekeeping services, for packaging and cardboard there is rubbish removal, and other home services are in “Household services”.
