Furniture fittings: how to choose hinges, drawer channels and handles
The main thing is to match the parameters
People most often go wrong with furniture fittings on the parameters. Hinges for overlay, half-overlay and inset doors are different, and the opening angle (110°, 155°) matters too. Drawer channels come as ball-bearing, roller and concealed types, from 250 to 600 mm long, with full or partial extension. For a wardrobe or kitchen, where the load is higher, look for channels with a high load rating.
Soft-close and systems
Soft-close closes a door or drawer smoothly without a bang. There are hinges with built-in soft-close, or separate add-on dampers. A push-to-open system opens a front with a light push, so no handles are needed. Some systems, such as Blum's Tandembox, consist of side walls, channels and a damper. Lift-up mechanisms and gas struts are needed for wall cabinets whose front opens upwards.
How it works with BlaBlaPrice
Fittings are sold by shops, warehouses and furniture makers, and prices vary with the batch and brand. You write one request with a list, and sellers reply in the chat: which items exactly, the price per piece or set, availability, delivery. They can see where their offer stands and improve their terms. It is free for the buyer, and only the one you choose gets your contacts. Read more: how it works.
What to put in your request
- What you need — hinges, channels, handles, lift-ups, gas struts, legs, edging, connectors.
- Type and parameters — channel length, hinge overlay type, angle, load rating.
- Soft-close or system — with soft-close, push, ball-bearing, tandem.
- Brand — Blum, Hettich, Hafele, or "equivalent".
- Quantity — pieces, pairs, sets.
- Colour or finish — chrome, matt black, gold, nickel.
- Delivery city and method.
- Budget.
Example: “I need 450 mm drawer channels, full extension, soft-close, 12 pairs, Hettich or equivalent. Also 24 soft-close hinges for overlay doors. Courier delivery to Chennai, budget up to ₹10,000.”
How to compare offers
It is convenient to compare price "per pair" or "per set", so check that sellers count the same way. Ask whether the fittings are original or an equivalent: equivalents vary in quality, and the difference shows after a year of use. Ask for photos of the packaging and the markings. For hinges, check the cup height (35 mm is standard) and the hole spacing.
For a series order, for a kitchen or wardrobe for example, take a small reserve at once: it is not always possible to buy the same batch later, and the finish can differ in shade. Check whether fixings are in the set, for example mounting plates and screws.
Common mistakes
- Taking channels without allowing for the depth of the drawer and the clearance.
- Buying hinges that don't fit the overlay type of the door.
- Experimenting with an unknown cheap brand in a kitchen, where the fittings work every day.
- Not allowing for the weight of the front, for example glass or solid wood.
