Motorcycle Gearbox Parts: Gears, Shafts, Forks

Rare parts and part numbers

A gearbox is made of gears, shafts, shift forks, the selector drum and the lever. For modern motorcycles the parts are easy to find, but for older ones, such as the Jawa 350 (type 638) or other classic bikes, they are often rare. This is where a part number helps: for example, 638-12-123. It is in the catalogue or stamped on the part. Without a number, give the model, the year of manufacture and the engine capacity.

What breaks most often

Typical problems: it jumps out of gear, the gear teeth wear, the shift forks bend, the drum cracks, or the splines develop play. Sometimes one gear is enough, for example second gear, not the whole gearbox. But gears work in pairs, so ask whether the mating part should be replaced as well.

If the gears engage with a crunch or drop out by themselves, the cause is sometimes not a gear but a worn fork or a stretched detent spring. Consult a mechanic on what exactly to change, and then you can name the exact part in your request, not “everything you have”. This cuts unnecessary spending a lot.

What to put in your request

  • which part — a gear (with its gear number), shaft, fork, drum, shift lever, complete gearbox;
  • bike model and year — for example Jawa 350, 1988;
  • engine — capacity, for example 350 cc;
  • part number — from the part or the catalogue;
  • original or aftermarket;
  • condition — new, or used in working order;
  • delivery city and budget.

Example: “I am looking for a second-gear gear for the output shaft of a Jawa 350, 1988, part number 638-12-123. New original, or used with no chipped teeth. Delivery to Lucknow, budget up to ₹2,500.”

How to compare offers

With used gears the main thing is the condition of the teeth: chips, pitting, rounded ends. Ask for photos of the teeth and splines. Pay attention to the number of teeth: it must match your version of the gearbox. For a complete gearbox ask whether it has been turned over, whether all gears engage, and whether there were metal shavings in the oil.

  • Whether circlips, washers and gaskets are included in the price.
  • Whether there is a warranty that it works.
  • Whether the seller can send several parts in one shipment.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

A rare gear is usually searched for through garages and forums for a long time. Here you create one request, and parts sellers and breakers reply in the chat. They see where their offer stands, so they often improve the price or terms. The site shows the best-value one first, with reviews of the seller beside it. Contacts are hidden. Questions and answers

How do I find a part for an old motorcycle?

Give the part number from the part or the catalogue, plus the model, year and engine. Add a photo of the broken part.

Is it enough to replace one gear?

Sometimes yes, but gears work in pairs. Ask a mechanic or the seller whether the neighbouring part should be replaced too.

What should I look at in a used gear?

Chips and wear on the teeth, and the condition of the splines and ends. Ask for clear photos.

Do all sellers see my number?

No, contacts are hidden and opened only to the seller you choose.
