Roadside assistance: how to call for help fast and not overpay
Prepare three things before you write
When your car has stopped, the main things for a mechanic are where you are, what happened and how fast you need help. Everything else is secondary. So start with these three facts, and only then add details: that way offers arrive faster and are more accurate.
The most common cases: a flat battery (a “jump start”), a punctured wheel, running out of fuel, keys locked inside the car, a car that will not start for no obvious reason. Each case needs its own kit: a jump starter, a jack and spare wheel, a can with the right fuel, a tool for opening the door.
What to put in your request
- what happened — battery, wheel, fuel, keys, will not start;
- where you are — city and area, and on a highway the direction and kilometre marker;
- when — now, urgent, evening or night;
- make and model, and fuel type: petrol, diesel or electric;
- what to bring — how many litres and what fuel, a spare wheel, a battery;
- conditions on site — an underground car park, a garage, the roadside, whether help can reach you;
- budget, if you want to name a sum.
Example: “Maruti Suzuki Swift, petrol, will not start, it looks like the battery is flat. I am parked in the compound of a society in Salt Lake, Kolkata, the entrance is clear. I need a jump start now or within an hour. Budget up to ₹800.”
How finding help works on BlaBlaPrice
You write your request on BlaBlaPrice, and nearby mechanics and assistance services reply in the chat: whether they can come, how soon and how much it will cost. The site shows the best offer first, and the reviews help you weed out random ones. Your number stays hidden until you choose a provider. If you need very fast help, write “urgent” straight away.
How to compare offers on the spot
Here time matters more than a couple of hundred rupees, but there are still details:
- how many minutes until arrival, and whether that is a real time, not “roughly”;
- what the price consists of: call-out, distance, labour and fuel separately;
- whether there is an extra charge at night, on holidays or for going out of town;
- whether you can pay after the job is done and get confirmation.
If you need help at night or out of town
At night and on a highway there is less choice and a call-out is often more expensive, so write your request straight away with the exact location: the kilometre marker, the nearest village or petrol pump. For a punctured wheel or an empty tank, the mechanic needs to know whether you have a spare wheel, whether a jack is needed and whether the car is in a safe place. Switch on the hazard lights and put out a warning triangle: it is for your safety while you wait.
What to avoid
Do not agree to a “price on the spot” if the provider has not named a sum in advance. If the problem keeps coming back, a jump start will not solve the cause: it is better to check the battery and alternator, and in a serious breakdown you will need auto electrical repair. To find the cause, car computer diagnostics is suitable.
