Truck Tyres for Tractor Units, Trailers and Buses: Buy Smart

Axle and type of work first

Truck tyres are chosen not only by size but by their place on the vehicle. The steering axle needs a tyre with precise handling and even wear, the drive axle one with a strong tread for traction, and the trailer axle one with reinforced sidewalls that stands up to side loads. There are also all-position tyres, but they are rarely the best on any particular axle.

How the vehicle works also matters. Long-haul highway runs, regional deliveries, a tipper in a quarry and a city bus all place different demands on the tread pattern and the strength of the carcass.

Size and indexes

Typical sizes are 315/80 R22.5 or 385/65 R22.5, shown on the sidewall. The size must suit the rim in both width and diameter. The load index looks like 156/150L: the first number is for single fitting, the second for dual fitting. You must not take an index lower than the vehicle maker requires.

New, used or retreaded

A new tyre gives predictable life and the manufacturer's warranty. A used one is cheaper, but for a truck the remaining tread, the absence of carcass damage and the age matter. There are also retreaded tyres (with a new tread cut on), often fitted on the drive or trailer axle, but for the steering axle it is better to take new ones. Ask who did the retreading and whether there is a warranty.

How to compare offers

  • the same size, load index and axle position;
  • manufacturer and tread model, not just “Chinese” or “European”;
  • price per tyre or per set, and whether GST is included;
  • delivery to your city and fitting on truck rims, which not every workshop does;
  • year of manufacture, if the tyres come from stock.

On BlaBlaPrice you describe your need once, and truck tyre sellers reply in the chat with stock, price and terms. They see where they stand among the other offers and may change their terms, so the price often comes out better. Contacts stay hidden until you choose a seller. Learn how it works in How it works.

What to put in your request

  • size — for example 315/80 R22.5;
  • axle — steering, drive, trailer or all-position;
  • type of vehicle — tractor unit, trailer, bus, tipper, light truck;
  • conditions of use — long-haul highway, regional, rough roads;
  • quantity and new or used;
  • climate — all-season, or winter for snowy hill routes;
  • load index, brand;
  • city and budget.

Example: “I need 2 new tyres 315/80 R22.5, index 156/150L, for the drive axle of a tractor unit on long-haul highway runs, all-season, preferably Continental or Hankook. Delivery to Chennai, budget up to ₹35,000 per tyre.”

For other machines, look at tractor, farm and special equipment tyres, and for cars, car tyres.

Questions and answers

How do tyres for the steering and drive axles differ?

Steering tyres handle better and wear evenly; drive tyres have a stronger tread for traction. If a tyre does not suit its axle, its life drops quickly.

What does the index 156/150L mean?

The first number is the permitted load on the tyre with single fitting, the second with dual fitting, and the letter is the maximum speed. Do not take an index lower than the maker requires.

Are retreaded truck tyres safe?

They are often used on the drive or trailer axle, but before buying ask who did the retreading and about the warranty. For the steering axle it is safer to take new ones.

What does it cost to buy through BlaBlaPrice?

It is free for buyers. A seller pays a small fee only when you choose their offer.
